I can&#8217;t think of any year in recent technological history that can rival 2013. We had <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/08\/bye-bye-steve\/\" target=\"_blank\">senior leaders leave their companies<\/a> and go into retirement.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest news this year without a doubt has been the dramatic downward movement of Nokia and BlackBerry. BlackBerry has had a year in which they lost their legacy as a mobile innovator. Their replacement CEO was also shown the door after the company failed to find new investors. Thorsten Heins arguably never got a proper chance to rebuild the once industry-leader BlackBerry, previously known as <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/01\/rim-no-more-blackberry-goes-to-the-power-of-10\/\">RIM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the tech wars are not over yet, as many tech-based businesses still face arduous times in 2014, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/01\/game-over-for-atari\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atari<\/a>, Sony and Nintendo are all looking at the heavens and hoping that customers will buy their product as 2013 has been a very tough year for them.<\/p>\n<p>The other big story this year has been the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/01\/is-dell-going-to-become-a-private-company\" target=\"_blank\">downward movement of Dell<\/a>. The company went from being financially-challenged public conglomerate to being a private company with finances that are no longer public knowledge. Apple has continued to release products that are very popular. The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/01\/apple-iphone-5-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone 5<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/09\/apple-unveils-the-5s-5c-iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C<\/a> have all received positive reviews and is presently amidst the most sought-after Android phones on the market, despite the iPhone 5C \u00a0being a slow seller.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung managed to a steady hand at the wheel, managed to secure an amazing year in sales, dubbing them market leaders in smart phones sector. The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/03\/samsung-raises-the-bar-with-the-galaxy-s-iv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung S IV<\/a> has become a very popular device of choice for many cellphone users globally.<\/p>\n<p>The world also lost two visionary founders \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/07\/amar-bose-a-revolutionary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amare Bos<\/a>e and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/07\/thanks-mr-engelbart\/\" target=\"_blank\">inventor of the mouse, Doug Engelbart<\/a>. The gentleman both had significant impact on the technology landscape.<\/p>\n<p>But my favourite news story for 2013 is without a doubt the sudden announcement from <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2013\/09\/microsoft-to-acquire-nokias-devices-services-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft to acquire Nokia\u2019s hardware business<\/a>. Not a single analyst saw it coming but it changed the layout of the mobile phone industry. 2013 was a year that contained a lot of change, and we can only hope that 2014 will bring a sense of stability to tech industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6406 aligncenter\" alt=\"2013\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013.png\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year is almost in the history books, and what a tumultuous year it has been for technology.
