{"id":27576,"date":"2020-03-25T12:22:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T10:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/blog\/?p=27576"},"modified":"2020-04-16T12:49:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T10:49:39","slug":"playstation-5-hardware-specs-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/blog\/playstation-5-hardware-specs-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Playstation 5: Hardware Specs &#038; What You Need to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sony&#8217;s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.eu.playstation.com\/2020\/03\/18\/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Playstation 5 deep-dive event<\/a> has given eager games a closer-look at the hardware and tech capabilities of the upcoming next-gen console.<\/p>\n<p>Presented by lead system architect Mark Cerny, the presentation gave some insight into what the new hardware will allow game developers to achieve, and how that would impact the experience of the player.<\/p>\n<h3>Hardware Specs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CPU:<\/strong>\u00a0AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPU:\u00a0<\/strong>10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPU architecture:\u00a0<\/strong>Custom RDNA 2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Memory interface:\u00a0<\/strong>16GB GDDR6 \/ 256-bit<\/li>\n<li><strong>Memory bandwidth:<\/strong>\u00a0448GB\/s<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal storage:\u00a0<\/strong>Custom 825GB SSD<\/li>\n<li><strong>IO throughput:\u00a0<\/strong>5.5GB\/s (raw), typical 8-9GB\/s (compressed)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expandable storage:<\/strong>\u00a0NVMe SSD slot<\/li>\n<li><strong>External storage:<\/strong>\u00a0USB HDD support (PS4 games only)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optical drive:<\/strong>\u00a04K UHD Blu-ray drive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>But, what does all this mean?<\/h3>\n<p>While the specs and numbers all look impressive, what does this really mean? Cerny explained that the goal of the PS5 is to make it architecture as &#8216;developer-friendly&#8217; as possible, in order for studios to get the most out of the console in order to create the best games.<\/p>\n<p>The solid state hard-drive is a particularly interesting feature, which will not only allow games to load faster, but also allow for bigger open worlds, for example, as developers don\u2019t need to limit games due to the mechanical drive.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the PS5 will support ray tracing. Simply put, ray tracing is a technique that makes light in video games behave like it does in real life. It works by simulating actual light rays, using an algorithm to trace the path that a beam of light would take in the physical world. Using this technique, game designers can make virtual rays of light appear to bounce off objects, cast realistic shadows, and create lifelike reflections. This, if utilised effectively, will mark a huge jump for visual fidelity in games.<\/p>\n<h3>Backwards Compatibility<\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to Sony developing the PS5 on similar architecture to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/search?search=Sony%20PlayStation%204%20500GB%20Slim%20Gaming%20Console&amp;utm_source=blog.pricecheck.co.za&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=blog_Playstation_5_Hardware_Specs_What_You_Need_to_Know&amp;utm_content=Playstation_5_Hardware_Specs_What_You_Need_to_Know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PS4<\/a>, it makes the PS5 easily handle PS4 backwards compatibility \u2013 through GPU architecture rather than hours of coding. Instead of traditional stereo sound, the PS5 will be able to deliver 3D audio thanks to the new Tempest Engine. An example of rainfall in games was used to highlight the benefits of 3D audio. At the moment,\u00a0the sound of rain in a game is a single audio track, but the PS5 would theoretically be capable of letting you hear individual raindrops, in relation to where the player character is.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the 3D audio capabilities will allow you use a standard pair of headphones to take advantage of the sense of presence and directionality Sony is promising here.<\/p>\n<h3>Release date &amp; price:<\/h3>\n<p>As for specific release details, Sony did say \u201cHoliday 2020\u201d, which would assume that it would arrive in Q4 of next year, specifically November or December.
