It seems the lack of sales of WebOS devices was the primary reason for this. I suspect that <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2011\/08\/google-buys-motorola-mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\">Googorola<\/a> is potentially adding to the equation as manufacturers are looking at strengthening their own offer to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The rumour mill has already starting churning possible new owners for WebOS.\u00a0 Apple and Google are not even added to the conversation as they already dominate in the mobile space. So who are the candidates to buy WebOS?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PriceCheckSA\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> could be a fit. Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s pride &amp; joy could acquire WebOS. They have the cash to do it and most importantly have been looking at potentially adding an operating system to their holdings. Think about it, owning a mobile operating system would ensure that they can control even more of the web with it. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/offers\/21963338\/HTC+ChaCha\/\" target=\"_blank\">facebook phone<\/a> which seems to make an appearance once every 3-4 months would then be a reality not be a rumour.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/search\/?search=Microsoft\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> might also want to consider it. They have a war chest to make acquisitions like this one. They are trying to close the gap to Apple and Google in mobile and WebOS could add technology that enhances their current offering. Adding WebOS could ensure that their rumoured tablet might actually happen (if it does not have to run a version of Microsoft\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/categories\/158\/Operating+Systems\/\" target=\"_blank\">operating system<\/a>). Adding WebOS and potentially buying <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2011\/02\/the-odd-couple\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nokia\u2019s mobile division<\/a> outright might ensure that Steve Ballmer shows the entire technology world that he is a canny operator.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/search\/?search=Samsung\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung<\/a> is the best fit for me. They already own their own operating system (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/categories\/f\/126\/Cellular+Phones\/f\/269\/Bada\/0\/tp.weekly\/DESC\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bada<\/a>) which has not gotten a lot of press but could do with tablet technology. In my opinion, their <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/2011\/04\/its-complicated-between-apple-samsung\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cit\u2019s complicated\u201d relationship<\/a> with Apple will ultimately lead to separation (Apple has invested billions into Toshiba and Sharp\u00a0 which indicates they believe the same thing might happen). WebOS could further enhance their mobile offering and ensure that HP actually gets some money back from their failed acquisition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The current financial climate is not really suited to making big acquisitions but in my opinion HP cannot really afford to keep WebOS. They have added staff to their expenses and I see no value for them to keep something that they don\u2019t want to continue to develop.<\/p>\n<p>The rumour mill will churn and churn until a press release is issued by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pricecheck.co.za\/search\/?search=HP\" target=\"_blank\">HP<\/a> clarifying their stance on what they plan to do with WebOS..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/Samsung-HP-WebOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1890\" title=\"Samsung HP WebOS\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/Samsung-HP-WebOS.jpg\" border=\"none\" alt=\"Samsung To buy WebOS from HP?\" width=\"575\" height=\"407\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In one of the biggest stories of 2011, HP decided to \u201cretire\u201d WebOS.
