Usually, only when it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/compareguru.co.za\/time-to-upgrade-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/?utm_source=PriceCheck&amp;utm_medium=Referral&amp;utm_campaign=sim_cards\" target=\"_blank\">time to upgrade<\/a>, or when we need to replace our existing SIM card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The SIM card was originally created in 1991 and, over the years, the chip has seen reductions in size as smartphones have gotten smaller and thinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">What Is Included In a SIM Card?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Each SIM card has an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) and an authentication key that validates the IMSI. This authentication key is usually by the network. The key\u00a0is what allows your phone to be able to connect to the network, which is obviously the main purpose of the SIM card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Each SIM card also has a unique identifier called the ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier), which is stored in the card and engraved on it. The ICCID consists of three numbers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">An identifying number for the SIM card issuer<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">An identifying number for the individual account<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A parity digit that\u2019s calculated from the other two numbers for extra security<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">SIM cards are also capable of storing other information, such as contacts and SMS messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Most SIM cards have a capacity between 32 to 128 KB, although in South Africa, most of the newer SIM cards are either 64KB or 128KB.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">SIM Card Sizes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">SIM cards are currently available in three sizes (there was one more size which is now no longer used):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/compareguru.co.za\/content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GSM_SIM_card_evolution.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17439 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/compareguru.co.za\/content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GSM_SIM_card_evolution.png\" alt=\"GSM_SIM_card_evolution\" width=\"800\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Current phones use either a micro or a nano SIM.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">While the list of of phones which use each SIM card is rather exhaustive, it tends to be the higher-end phones &#8211; such as the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S &#8211; that\u00a0use nano SIMs, while the mid-range handsets tend to use the micro SIM.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Introducing The e-SIM<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the future, we could be seeing devices with an e-SIM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">e-SIM stands for embedded SIM. This is a SIM card that will be embedded in your phone or tablet (or wearable), instead of having a removable one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This means that you&#8217;ll be able to select your network at the store when buying your new phone or tablet, instead of having to go out and purchase one separately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This technology is not widely available, but there are reports of both Apple and Samsung being in talks with the GSMA to standardise these e-SIMs for use in future products (wearable technology would greatly benefit from this).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">SIM cards might be the forgotten child in technology, but it doesn&#8217;t mean that it too isn&#8217;t undergoing its own changes and evolutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/compareguru.co.za\/sim-cards-small-smaller-and-smaller-still\/?utm_source=PriceCheck&amp;utm_medium=Referral&amp;utm_campaign=sim_cards\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12823 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.pricecheck.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/GuruReadMore-300x681-300x68.png\" alt=\"gurureadmore-300x681\" width=\"300\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SIM cards are things that we think about very rarely.
