If you have a smartphone then you’re probably using WhatsApp. If you have an older phone, then you’ll want to know when WhatsApp will discontinue support for your device.
According to the company’s FAQs:
The following platforms are no longer supported as of the beginning of 2017:
- Android versions older than 2.3.3
- Windows Phone 7
- iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
You won’t be able to use WhatsApp on the following platforms for:
- Nokia Symbian S60 after June 30, 2017
- BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 after December 31, 2017
- Windows Phone 8.0 and older after December 31, 2017
- Nokia S40 after December 31, 2018
- Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020
Note: Because we will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time.
WhatsApp says that they’re discontinuing support for the above mentioned platforms is because they don’t offer the kind of capabilities they need to expand the app’s features in the future. The company recommends upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp.
Once you have one of these devices, simply install WhatsApp and verify your phone number on the new device. Keep in mind that WhatsApp can only be activated with one phone number on one device at a time.
