This week a new player was welcomed into the tablet arena here in South Africa, and that player is none other than the incredibly sleek and slim- lined iPad Air. But don’t let this new tablet take away the limelight from all the other great ones out there, especially this festive season when there are stockings to fill! I am going to share some of our top picks with you:

1.  No introduction needed here (as I have already made one) for the new iPad Air. If you already have an iPad and loving iOS7, then this will be right up your ally. Apple has taken all the best features from the past iPads and has run them on a more lightweight, yet powerful piece of tech.

2. Following on from Apple, comes the iPad mini with retina display. As they say, dynamite comes in small packages, and this little number is no different. It’s smaller size is just a bonus for people on the go, who need something a little more compact in their hands. It is just as powerful and efficient as all their other iOS tablets.

3.  Now for the Android fans out there, we give you the Google Nexus 7!  Carrying on from the other tablets brought out in its range – the Nexus 7 boasts a much sleeker design including a rear camera now.  Considering all its new features, including the very impressive screen resolution and faster processor, you would not expect the battery life to be anything great, yet reports say it still offers an impressive amount of hours worth of battery. So for all the heavy users out there, you won’t need to be worried about straying too far from power outlets.

4. Staying with Android, but jumping over to Samsung, one of our favorite tablets is the Samsung  Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. This tablet is great, especially for those of you who are loving their Samsung Galaxy phones. It has all the same features as the phones and as far as tablets go, it is light in weight with a great hand grip. Complementing the phones, it is available in the signature Galaxy white with an option of gold brown too. Maybe staying too close to the actual Galaxy phones? Your call. Oh and one last bonus – you can control your TV with this tablet!

5. Here is something you can fill a Christmas stocking with (given that it is made of panda fur) and that is the Microsoft  Surface 2. If you love Microsoft, Windows and especially all things Windows 8, this is your ultimate do-everything tablet.  The price is high, but it has certainly dropped from the original Surface. To me, this is a ‘smart’ tablet. I see it as more of a working man’s type of gadget who doesn’t necessarily need all the apps and offerings from Android and iOS because he certainly won’t be using this for the kids to play “cut the rope”. This well designed piece lets you get serious about tablets.

And there we have a selection of tablets for you to choose from. Just remember, these are great gifts whether for yourself or someone else, so always take care of them, consider covers and cleaners to always maintain and protect. I really hope you get to enjoy yours this festive season!
