The glory of the Garden Route!

0

It’s famous the world over and it’s not hard to see why – pristine beaches, an amazing coastline and enough activities to satisfy every outdoor enthusiast. The Garden Route is holiday magic wrapped up in a breath-taking package.

How to get there: George Airport is your best bet if you’re going to be flying. For the cheapest flights around, search here.

Top tips on what to do:

  1. Hike in the Robberg Nature Reserve near Plettenberg Bay. If you’re fit it will take you about three hours; four to five hours if you’ve been slacking off. The views are spectacular, and keep an eye out for whales and dolphins – they love this part of the world. Make sure you have a comfortable pair of hiking boots, take along plenty of water and snacks and don’t forget your bathing suit. You’ll want a dip in the ocean at some stage.
  2. Tackle the Harkerville mountain bike trails. The lush forests between Knysna and Plett are home to some spectacular scenery and are ideal for mountain bike lovers. Four colour-coded routes cater for everyone from beginner to advanced and promise a thrilling ride under a shady canopy of ancient trees.
  3. Explore the Noetzie castles. Situated at the end of a dirt road just outside Knysna is the small, unspoilt cove of Noetzie, the protected home of the rare African black oyster catcher. Turreted castles were built along the beach in the 1930s and stand like sentinels on the edge of the beach.
  4. Bungee jump at the Bloukrans River Bridge. Home to the world’s highest commercially operated bungee jump, thrill seekers can plunge 216 m to the river below. Bloukrans makes use of pendulum bungee technology, ensuring the smoothest, safest jump possible. A must for adrenaline junkies!
  5. Ski on the Knysna lagoon. The tranquil expanse of water this part of the country is famous for is a water-sport lover’s dream. Glide across the surface on your own water skis or hire a pair when you’re there. You’ll feel like you’re flying as you speed along behind the boat – and you’ll get a great workout at the same time.
