Review: WWE 2K16 – PS4

Beware of the Texas Rattlesnake! He can strike at any…stunner, stunner out of nowhere! WWE’s 2K16 gives you the ability to “stomp a mud hole in your opponents” as you follow the career of the legendary “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Platform: PS4

Genre: Professional wrestling, fighting, sports

Game mode: Single-player, multiplayer

2K sports returns with its third iteration of the popular pro wrestling game. WWE 2K15 garnered a lot of criticism, so let’s see if 2K16 has pinned down the flaws.

The counter/reversal system was sub-par in the previous iteration, and this year, it doesn’t seem to be much better. Yuke’s has implemented stamina meters that help with the pace of matches, but this means that you cannot always counter when you need to, leaving you wide open to endure beatings from your opponents.

WWE Superstar, Randy Orton

Two much welcomed features are the upgraded reversal system that, together with Working Holds, allow you more time to build your stamina, allowing for more attacking moves

The commentary team has also been expanded to include the voice of John “Bradshaw” Layfield, which honestly wasn’t all that necessary.

The game features the largest superstar roster, to date. You’re able to choose from 120 playable characters; you can also unlock “hidden” characters.

The Highlight

The Stone Cold Steve Austin showcase: This is without a doubt the highlight of the game! Austin put the “Attitude” in the no-holds-barred Attitude Era – a time which many fans wish had never left the WWE.

You’re able to participate in Austin’s most memorable feuds, particularly with Bret Hart, The Rock and Mr. McMahon.  The showcase also features the return of Jim Ross’ commentating at ring-side – talk about nostalgia!

Other modes include: MyCareer; WWE Universe and a Creative Suite where you are able to design your own character.

“WWE 2K16 is as close to a fusion of performance and competition as a wrestling game has ever gotten”

“And that’s the bottom line because Stone Cold said so!”

Verdict: 8/10
