Review: The Outer Worlds

0

While it may initially look very familiar, The Outer Worldsis one of the most unique, entertaining, and surprisingly refreshing games of 2019, and one which fans of the action-RPG genre should embrace wholeheartedly.

There’s no doubt that Obsidian’s game will be compared to the likes of Fallout and Borderlands, but The Outer Worlds does a lot to separate itself from those beloved series, bringing a more streamlined RPG experience, faster gunplay, and a satirical undertone about capitalism and exploitation.

Instead of a huge open-world (which gamers can find overwhelming), you can instead travel between a handful of dynamic and vivid worlds using a hub-town. This makes the fluff between missions a lot quicker and simpler, giving you far more time in the action itself, which is great too!

Combat in The Outer Worlds feels great thanks to solid weapon feedback and interesting guns, which you’ll mostly be firing at space pirates, giant robots, or alien beasts coming your way. Players also have the ability to upgrade certain attributes, with one being a slow-mo type precision system, allowing you to target specific weak-points (or just pull off some stylish kills) which brings a frenetic energy to the moment-to-moment shooting that the game offers.

While most RPGs have you travelling around a barren world alone, The Outer Worlds throws some company your way, allowing you the ability to partner up with some AI companions. This gives you some company and assistance in the hostile intergalactic world you’ll be exploring.

The Outer Worlds is the surprise hit of 2019, delivering a game which will appeal to both shooter fans and deep-RPG enthusiasts, while also ensuring there’s a strong tone of humour throughout the experience. A must-play for fans of the genre and those looking for something a little different.

The Outer Worlds is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
