With such skepticism from the previous entry, The Last Jedi, it’s hard not to address the concerns from the get-go. The Rise of Skywalker is big, bombastic, and everything you’d hope a Star Wars movie to be, but it’s also a bit of a mess. That’s not to say that there aren’t some spectacular fight sequences and eye-popping space battles, but the loopholes and lack of logic in the plot often drag those moments down.
As touched on, what The Rise of Skywalker gets right is its action-sequences. There are some truly entertaining moments during the big set-pieces, and the performances from Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and the rest of the gang are endearing, with Oscar Isaac being notably strong in his role as Po.
But Rise of Skywalker is one of those films that you can’t really talk about without dodging spoilers, so we won’t unwrap the plot. Just keep your expectations in check and remember what Star Wars is all about: escapism, family battles, archetype characters, and showcasing quirky aliens and locations, and it does that well… along with inducing some eye-rolls along the way.
