PS5: Everything We Know So Far

0

While a Playstation 4 is still very-much a great purchase and investment from a gaming point of view, Sony is readying to reveal its successor, the PS5, sometime within the next 12 months. But, before Sony unveil their next home console, let’s take a look at everything we know about the Playstation 5.

Most of the information on the PS5 we currently know comes from lead system architect Mark Cerny, who released a few tidbits of information regarding what the next system will entail.

The first of these big changes are in its CPU and GPUs (which will be variants of the AMD Ryzen 3rd gen and Radeon’s Navi respectively) that will make the console capable of ‘ray-tracing’ – a high-performance graphics technique that offers some pretty crazy results that are on display in the video below. Cerny also mentioned the PS5 will support 8K visuals.

Another huge bit of information is that the PS5 will utilise a Solid-State Drive (SSD), meaning the speed that it accesses stored data at will be immensely upgraded. A demonstration by Cerny used to showcase this is the fast-travel function on Insomniac’s Spider-Man. On a PS4 Pro it took 15 seconds while the SSD equipped devkit pulled it off in 0.8 seconds.

One of the biggest discussions around new consoles is the implementation (or lack thereof) of backwards compatibility, allowing players to play previously-released games for older systems on the new one. According to a Sony Corporate Strategy Presentation, it suggests that the PS5’s backwards compatibility extends to the PS4 library only and supports physical PS4 discs – so it’s definitely better than nothing.

Regarding its appearance, there’s little information so far as even the final case design is likely still in development. That said, it’s safe to assume that the PS5 won’t stray too far from the slick, all-black theme of past iterations.
