As a typical South African, my knowledge of the rest of Africa was seriously challenged when I first landed in Lagos, Nigeria. However, my misconceptions were instantly flung aside and I awoke to a world I never imagined…
My first impression after landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport was one of chaos, disorganisation and general mayhem. I strongly recommend arranging for a protocol officer to see you through the customs process.
Upon leaving the building, I was faced with the next shock to the system – the heat and humidity literally takes your breath away. Traffic and navigating the roads looks impossible to a visitor’s untrained eye, so a trustworthy driver is also strongly recommended. All that being said, my heart melted the moment I encountered the locals of Lagos.
There is no question as to why Nigeria is viewed as the economic hub of Africa. Apart from its massive population, one third of which comprises of people aged between 10 and 24, their hunger for success is insatiable. The people of Nigeria, dressed in their best clothes, head off to work by foot along dusty, pothole riddled roads with smiles on their faces. And the streets are lined with vendors selling anything from food to airtime for your mobile phone.
There is a constant buzz and it seems that the city of Lagos never rests.
There is always time to say hello, and always time catch up with a friend along the way. The locals know what matters.
Face to face encounters with customers is still the best way to conduct your business in Nigeria. This is what the rest of the world is missing, as many of us simply aim to “get the job done” with a matter-of-fact approach to interaction. There is still so much to learn from our fellow Africans, and I cannot wait to share more of my experiences with you!
