According to recent data, in 2020, mobile games accounted for 43 percent of global gaming market revenues. The mobile segment as a whole generated nearly half of all gaming revenue worldwide. Console gaming was the second-strongest segment with a 29 percent market share.
Boxed/downloaded PC games also generated a significant amount of revenue with 34.2 in 2020 followed by the moderate earnings of Tablet games and Browser PC games which made 6% and 2% respectively.

This is further supported by data reported by Game Analytics, in Q1 of 2020 the number of mobile gamers grew from 1.2 billion people to 1.75 billion per month, which represents an increase of 46 percent.
This spike in mobile gaming has a lot to do with global lockdowns as a result of Covid-19. Being forced to stay indoors at home, many people had a lot more free time and looked to mobile gaming to pass the time. Mobile gaming is also a lot more accessible than PC and console gaming with high price points of gaming devices and gaming titles acting as a barrier to entry.
2021 Projections For Global Games Market
So what does this hold for the future of gaming? 2020 was a big year for the global gaming industry, as lockdowns kept a majority of the world indoors for a time, increasing video game engagement across the board. Because of the dramatic and unexpected spike experienced in 2020, the global games market is expected to contract in 2021 by 1.1% but will more than likely still have a strong performance with new gamers embracing gaming as a hobby.
Smartphone games are projected to experience the highest growth in 2021. By the end of 2021, experts expect yet more mobile gaming growth, as mobile gaming continues to establish itself as the dominant gaming platform. In 2020, the games industry experienced a shift in focus towards being ‘mobile-first’ and this trend looks to continue in 2021. More games studios that traditionally focused on developing only PC and console games are putting their resources into developing more mobile titles.
In fact, some of the most popular games from PC and console are now available on mobile. These include the Grand Theft Auto series, Minecraft, Doom, the Final Fantasy series, Tomb Raider, Max Payne and Half-Life, to name just a few.
