Michael Lewis – An Author Of Note

0

Writing a book is a difficult task. Writing a best seller once can be seen as something of a fluke but doing it with 3 books does imply that the author has considerable skill. My opinion on authors is that the best are great story tellers and can catch the attention of the reader. No matter the topic, genre etc certain authors can do it continuously. The less popular authors have the ability to make a reader put down their work within 20 pages. It is a fine line but one that needs examination prior to buying any published authors work.

His first book called Liar’s Poker is a written account of working on Wall Street. Lewis did work for a Wall Street company before his conscience made him move out of the industry. I think the book world got richer at the expense of the financial industry.

The second book Moneyball is currently being filmed and will become a movie in late 2010 / early 2011. It is a look at the recruitment of baseball players by using their statistics as a guideline. Finding a great talent with a specific hitting average or on base percentage takes a clear strategy. The baseball industry has subsequently seen a rise in mathematical students joining teams to scout players. It is a complicated process and Lewis takes the reader into the boardroom where these decisions are taken. The baseball terminology will ensure that readers will be looking at Wikipedia in more detail to understand the finer details.

The last book he wrote takes a look at the causes of the financial meltdown which crippled America and its economy. It is detailed and full of explanations to ensure that the reader understands all the financial jargon. The Big Short can be seen as a post mortem of note and Lewis paints a very dark picture of what caused the financial meltdown.

All three of these books will ensure that your hours of reading will pass quickly.
