Garmin has announced a new range of solar-powered watches, geared towards helping active types do what they love, for longer. This new adventure range sees Garmin adding solar power to some of their more high-end, multi-sport watches, including the Fenix 6 series, Instinct series and Tactix Delta.
While the main features of the watches remain the same, there are some new design options and new additions to the activity menu, including activities like surfing, mountain biking and climbing. The main difference and upgrade to the solar series lies in the solar ‘Power Glass’, which increases the charge capabilities for the watches. While more expensive than their non-solar counterparts, this new upgrade will indeed be worth the extra investment for keen outdoor adventurers.
Which Garmin watches are now solar powered?
Of course, you can still find the non-solar versions of these watches, but the solar-powered range now includes:
Instinct series:
Unleash your active side with Instinct series. With astonishing battery life, that enables you to experience more, the Instinct series watches will keep you connected and fit with smart features and wellness tracking.
With a battery life of up to 54 days with solar power, or an unlimited battery life when in battery saver watch mode, this watch is a major milestone for Garmin. The watch offers 2 additional model options to the standard Instinct Solar model. Instinct Solar Surf Edition is purpose-built with specialised surf features, such as tide data and a dedicated surfing activity to help surfers make the most of every wave. Instinct Solar Tactical Edition, will prove to be popular on the mission or hunting expedition and is equipped with tactical-specific features such as night-vision goggle compatibility and Stealth mode.

In addition to Instinct’s already robust outdoor activity and health tracking, Instinct Solar now also includes Pulse Ox2 to gauge how well an individual’s body is absorbing oxygen and Body Battery to optimise body energy reserves through health monitoring metrics.
Fenix 6 series:
The Fenix 6S Pro Solar and Fenix 6 Pro Solar are the newest members of the Garmin flagship multisport GPS smartwatch line. The ultimate multi-sport watch, the Fenix 6 has additional features for runners, such as animated workouts. There’s also respiration tracking, Garmin pay and the option to add music to the watch for your adventure. Much like the Instinct series, the Fenix 6 and 6S Solar editions come surf, mountain bike and indoor climb-ready. Of course, the real game-changer here is the battery life. The battery life of the watch increases to up to 10.5 days with solar, or 59 days when the watch is in battery saver mode.
Tactix Delta series:
Tested to US military standards, the Tactix Delta series probably isn’t the watch to invest in if you’re training for your first marathon. That said, it’s a spectacular device and offers up to 120 days of battery life when in battery saver mode.
Mission-ready features on the Tactix Delta Solar Edition include stealth mode, which disables location sharing and wireless connectivity, and a kill switch to wipe all user memory. The rugged, sophisticated design features an always-on 1.4” display, scratch-resistant sapphire lens, black DLC-coated steel bezel, black PVD-coated steel rear cover and all-new military-inspired black tactical nylon QuickFit band with reinforced stitching and exposed black metal hardware.
