160 000 Wii U’s sold worldwide

Console gaming is currently in a very interesting situation – two companies are in the final stages before unveiling their new consoles to customers. The Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are on a lot of wish lists for the festive season across the globe. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 continue to be sold to customers not willing to wait for the new consoles.

After the “big 2” the fight for survival is increasingly. Nintendo, the iconic gaming company, continues to post disappointing results. Newly created consoles from crowd sourcing platforms such as Kickstarter appear. Hovering over this space are 2 tech giants – Apple and Google. Apple’s devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) have slowly become a time consumer for casual gamers. Google is supposedly working on a gaming device as well.

Nintendo has indicated via their quarterly results that they sold 160 000 Wii U’s globally in 3 months.  To put this into context popular games like Halo, Call of Duty have sold millions on launch weekends. The Wii U is clearly not the product that everyone expected as this was supposedly their challenger in the handheld gaming space. Is it a case of Nintendo slowly becoming a historical entry for the console gaming archives? 2014 might be the year that their existence is under the spotlight.

Have you bought a Nintendo Wii U? If so, tell us in the comments why you made the purchase?
