The season for big game releases is upon us, and we’re being treated to some massive titles this quarter, with everything from franchise sequels to annual sports entries now on stores shelves. We’ve played FIFA 20, Borderlands 3, and The Surge 2 to find out whether you should spend your hard-earned money on them or not.
Borderlands 3

The colourful, over-the-top, random-gun-generating loot-shooter Borderlands is back for another instalment, bringing with it some new characters, baddies, and environments to pillage. There’s definitely been a greater focus on the moment-to-moment shooting mechanics of the game, with the weapons feeling punchier and far more detailed than in past entries. The randomised gun mechanic finally feels far more than a gimmick and the game delivers thousands of weapons that all look, fire, and feel different from one another. The boss battles are also particularly enjoyable and present their own challenges, however, you can’t help to feel some of the other portions of the game carry a very ‘been there, done that’ feeling. Although, there’s more than enough content to warrant a dip back into the zaniness of Borderlands.

Most gamers who play FIFA know what to expect with each new entry into the franchise. A bit of a gameplay tweak here and a visual upgrade there, but FIFA 20 does finally add some new ingredients to the formula. The most exciting new addition, Volta, is essentially a 5-a-side mode akin to the FIFA Street titles of yesteryear, which provides a bit of a faster, more frantic experience that friends on a couch will find the most fun with.
The Surge 2

The Surge may have initially felt like a Dark Souls clone, but the cybernetically-enhanced action RPG has carved out a fantastic identity for itself. The sequel brings more of the same, while enhancing its dynamic limb-targeting system and gory combat. The core gameplay of exploring and difficult combat hasn’t been altered too much, but the environments have seen a huge upgrade with far bigger and varied locales fleshing out the game world and lore of The Surge universe. If you’re a fan of the first game, you’ll get that augmented itch-scratch you’ve been waiting for.
