5 Things You Didn’t Know About Fragrances

0

Choosing a fragrance is a very personal decision. Picking the right fragrance is based on an individual’s preference when it comes to scents, but also the time of day, where they are going and what they are doing. This is why for many people, having more than one fragrance to suit their mood and the occasion is so important. Applying a chosen scent should be the final step when getting ready and for many people impacts their confidence, the way they feel, and how they approach their day.

A fragrance can express who you are and who you want to be. Applying a fragrance can make you feel attractive, sexy, bold, understated or playful – all with a simple ‘spritz’. But, even though most of us have a favourite fragrance that we assume we know like the back of our hands, there is still much to learn about the art of perfumery.

While no one knows the exact date that the first perfume was made, fragrance dates back to at least Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia, where it was associated with the gods. In fact, the Egyptian god Nefertum, the god of perfume, is also known as the god of healing, which makes perfect sense when you consider the healing powers of scent.

The first recorded perfumer was a lady by the name Tapputi, a chemist working in Ancient Mesopotamia in around 1200 BCE. In these times perfumes were used for hygiene and cleanliness, as well as ceremonially and as a symbol of nobility. Early perfume was made using natural materials such as bark, wood, roots, leaves, flowers and seeds. Before long, the Greeks and Romans became aware of the benefits of scent, and perfume was manufactured throughout the world. It is believed that in 1190, the Parisians began to produce perfume commercially, and that this was the start of the industry.

Today we are spoilt for choice: from florals, to woods, to Oriental, to fresh scents, there is something for everyone. No matter what your preference, there is a scent that will resonate with it.

Whether you have a favourite fragrance you always buy, or are looking for a new perfume to discover, here are 5 interesting facts about fragrances to help you choose the right one for you:

Heat activates the scent

Applying a scent to your pulse points (your wrists, and behind the ears) means that the scent is located on points where the blood vessels are closest to the skin. This means that the fragrance is heated slightly making the scent radiate further.

Scent should be treated gently

When most people apply a scent, they spritz their wrist and then quickly rub it against their other wrist. Ebrahim says that this is a common error, “Rubbing your wrists together can impact the top notes. Secondly, it mixes the perfume with your natural oils, which can change the way it smells. Spritz, let it dry and enjoy!”

Scents differs from person to person

Keep in mind that the oil levels in your skin, your diet and the pH or acidity of your skin can all affect how a fragrance smells when applied. Your uniqueness directly affects the scent, making it even more distinct! So, when shopping for a new fragrance, be sure to spritz a little on yourself as well as the sample paper they provide at the beauty counter.

Moisture helps to maintain fragrances

Applying a layer of moisturising cream or lotion prior to your fragrance each morning means that your scent is likely to hold for longer. Layering your scent with a similar fragranced body lotion will amplify the scent.
