The month of April has its fair-share of public holidays, which is great, because there are some pretty big games arriving this month that you need to take note of! We’ve listed 5 of the most exciting releases touching down in SA below:
Extinction
Release date: 10 April 2018 (Xbox One | PS4 |PC)
Coming from the team behind the beloved fighting game Killer Instinct, Extinction is a giant-slaying hack-‘n-slash game that throws you into the boots of one of the world’s last Sentinels, who must defend humanity’s cities from rampaging, 10-storey-tall ogres and the armies that trail in their wake. Players will have to use speed and skill to chop the ogres down to size (literally) by removing their armour and limbs to expose their weak points. It looks like a great combination between a colouful hack-‘n-slash and Shadow of the Colossus, and that’s not a bad thing at all.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Release date: 11 April 2018 (Xbox One | previously released on PS4)
First releasing on the PS4 in 2017, Ninja Theory’s brilliant action-adventure game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, makes its debut on Microsoft’s console this month. Given that it comes from the team who developed the underrated Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and the incredibly under-appreciated Devil May Cry reboot, Xbox gamers should take not of this one. The game is set in the Viking age whereby players take control of a character named Senua, a broken Celtic warrior who embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. It’s trippy, gorgeous, and features some strategic yet brutal melee combat.
Yakuza 6: Song of Life
Release date: 17 April 2018 (PS4)
Yakuza 6: Song of Life marks the first proper Yakuza game of this console generation, which has been built from the ground up on a brand-new engine. The main storylines in Yakuza games are dense, mature, and operatic, with themes of revenge, atonement, betrayal, and family (you know, exactly the sort of the thing the word “Yakuza” conjures up). The new title picks up after the events of Yakuza 5, which fans will be brushed up on upon starting Song of Life. However, while everything is ‘new’ in Yakuza 6, the fan-beloved gameplay formula remains – and for the initiated, that’s insane beat-’em-up scenarios mixed with bizarre side-quests and tons of mini-games.
God of War
Release date: 20 April 2018 (PS4)
Easily one of the most anticipated games of the year, let alone the month, God of War sees the return of the deity-killer Kratos in a new adventure which delves into Norse mythology. The game will revolve around Kratos’ relationship with his son, Atreus, who players will also be able to take control of. It players in a similar fashion to past God of War games, but has a closer, more visceral third-person perspective. Of course, the giant creature battles return and look better than ever.
Nintendo Labo
Release date: 20 April 2018 (Switch)
Nintendo’s “toys to life” cardboard accessory experiment, Nintendo Labo, finally arrives for Switch owners this month. It’s essentially a series of kits that you build into various contraptions and then equip onto your console or controllers, such as a piano that you can actually play. There’s also a robot pack and a fishing pole and it all looks quite clever and fun.
