Horizon: Zero Dawn

Easily one of 2017’s best games, Horizon: Zero Dawn came out of nowhere to take its place as one of the PS4’s best releases. Developed by Killzone studio Guerilla Games, this post-apocalyptic action-adventure is an exciting yet savage look at a world post-modern civilisation. Playing as heroine Aloy, the game relies heavily on its hunting, stealth and combat mechanics in order to survive the harsh environments and giant robotic beasts that look are basically Terminator dinosaurs.
Gears of War 4
Available on: Xbox One, PC
The first three Gears of War games got a lot of love on the Xbox 360, but Gears of War 4 slipped a little under the radar upon it’s 2016 release; and with Gears of War 5 rolling around in 2019, what better time to indulge in one of the best third-person shooters of this generation. Gears 4 doesn’t diverge too far away from the cover-shooter formula, but does introduce new gameplay twists thanks to some great environmental changes and snazzy guns that mix up the chainsawing carnage.
Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 has only just been released, so it’s unlikely that there’ll be any great deals on it just yet, but given how dense and jam-packed of content it is, now is a good time to pick up Rockstar’s Western masterpiece. From the spectacular scale of the fictitious American West, right down to the time-sinking side-quests, RDR 2 has an abundance of things to do to make your Christmas period one to remember.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

If you like your shooters with no BS, full-tilt action, and a tongue firmly planted in the cheek, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus is right up your alley. The game picks up after the events of 2014’s brilliant yet under-appreciated The New Order, and the sequel is every bit the challenging, over-indulgent Nazi-shooter you want it to be, but it’s also not as brash and blunt as it initially looks, providing a relatable, human story alongside its spray of bullets and blood.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn’t just another addition to the Tomb Raider library of jungle-exploring adventures – it’s a much-needed progression for the character and gameplay mechanics that remind us of why we love this franchise so much, while throwing in some exciting new elements and putting a focus of narrative and story, resulting in one of the best Tomb Raider games to date.
