John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Release date: 17 May 2019

Keanu Reeves is back in the third instalment of his revenge-soaked shoot-’em-up John Wick franchise, and the first trailer has been released for your viewing pleasure. Titled John Wick 3: Parabellum, the third entry sees Keanu Reeves’ hitman-turned-dog-lover-turned-angry-revenge-guy go up against New York’s most dangerous assassins thanks to a massive bounty which has been placed on his head.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

Release date: 17 May 2019

Admittedly one the weirdest movies coming in 2019, despite it’s box-office potential, is Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. This live-action/animated hybrid film starring Justice Smith and the voice of Ryan Reynolds takes inspiration from the spin-off series which features the titular Pokémon star (who fancies himself as a detective) and a human companion, as they try to solve mysteries in and around the world of Pokémon.

Brightburn

Release date: 31 May 2019

What is Superman arrived on Earth, but was evil? This is basically the premise behind Brightburn, the latest James Gunn-produced horror which flips the hero-from-another-planet scenario on its head, following a young boy from an unknown world who begins to lean towards his darker side rather than becoming Earth’s saviour. Elizabeth Banks and David Denman star as the young, troubled boy’s parents who have to decide whether to protect or fight their adopted extraterrestrial child.

Aladdin

Release date: 24 May 2019

Disney is on the fast-track to recreating its classic hits, and Aladdin gets its live-action turn this month. Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari round out the starring roles, which should make for an interesting retelling of the iconic Arabian tale.

Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters

Release date: 31 May 2019

Godzilla’s reappearance on the big screen in 2014 was met with slightly mixed reception, not because it wasn’t a well-executed movie, but probably because the average audience member was expecting to see far more of the titular behemoth than they did. It’s been a long time in the works, and based on what the first trailer revealed, this time they won’t be using the massive beasts sparingly. Instead, it looks like it will be the opposite, and in addition to Godzilla, we’ll be seeing a few of his most famous rivals (and perhaps an ally or two) join for what is likely to be a movie of truly epic scale.
