When Google bought Motorola there was plenty of buzz about partners potentially being locked out from accessing the latest version of Android. Patents were mentioned as another reason for the acquisition and then it went quiet.
The silence was broken with multiple reductions in Motorola staff indicating that Google was trying to tighten the reins at Motorola before starting the drive to make phones etc. It has clearly started as a new phone is expected to be unveiled.
At Google things have also changed as Andy Rubin is no longer in charge of the Android division and Google’s partner OEM relationships with HTC and Samsung is no longer what it was prior to Motorola’s acquisition. On both counts Google has unveiled special Android versions of these devices.
The Moto X is at the moment under wraps and being used by select Googlers. Eric Schmidt was seen using one. They have clearly tried to keep the phone as secret as possible but the Moto X has to be a success. If not, it could mean the end of Google’s quest to make hardware.
Are you considering a Moto X?
