A Disney research team have developed technology that projects 3D colouring book textures while you’re working on them.
Augmented reality and colouring books first came together when developers created apps which allowed the user to take a photo of a picture in a colouring book, colour in the picture and then project a three-dimensional coloured image of the finished picture.
Crayola has used older forms of augmented technology to project a three dimensional image once you had finished colouring it in. But what is different about the Colour And Play technology currently used by Disney? Well, it allows for real-time projection of an image while you are colouring in, and not simply an image that is rendered once completed.
The technology does more than just project a static image, it also detects any movement such as creases or bends on the page. Colour And Play will also pick up on finer details and colour textures.
Augmented reality is set to take the world of colouring books to new exciting heights, bridging the gap between static images and animation. The technology is currently available for download for iOS and Android and is ideal for any sized tablet.
