We are in the middle of one of my most favorite weeks of the year. No, its not the end of February that leads into March but rather the fact that the entire world is focused on Spain. Barcelona is hosting the Mobile World Congress in which all the cellphone manufacturers (with the exception of Apple that does its own thing) unveil their 2012 products. Call it the “one big product launch” or the place where anyone and everyone related to the mobile phone ecosystem is seen. These 4 days of the congress set the tone for the entire year.
Nokia seems to have gone for the jugular with their new launches. Wait for it, a 41 megapixel camera on a Nokia cellphone! The whole idea with this phone is to provide users with an ability to be able to zoom in without carrying an additional camera lens in your pocket. It does pose the question whether the digital camera is on the road to extinction. I wonder whether Nokia considered the fact that this could be seen as either a revolutionary device or a passing fad. Time will be the answer on how users adopt the Nokia 808 PureView.
The Nokia 808 PureView features a 41-megapixel sensor with our highest performance Carl Zeiss optics to date and Nokia’s brand-new pixel oversampling technology.
Sorry, did you just say 41-megapixels?
Yes, that’s right. But this combination isn’t about shooting pictures the size of billboards! Instead, it’s about creating amazing pictures at normal, manageable sizes.
HTC have unveiled their One range. What is very interesting to note is that HTC is also down sizing their amount of products available to the public. I am beginning to think that most cellphone manufacturers will go this route. A lot less clutter in terms of marketing different phones and focusing on a few. Sounds like an Apple strategy if you ask me. The HTC One range is focused on photos and music. The music makes sense as HTC has a majority stake in Beats By Dre, so it is logical to assume that a majority of their new phones will have some sort of iteration of Beats by Dre technology in them.
The phone that drew my attention the most is the HTC One X.
The HTC One X features a beautifully crafted polycarbonate unibody that has the ruggedness of metal but is super lightweight. With seamless construction, the unibody combines a unique high gloss ‘piano’ finish and a matte back. HTC One X is blazing fast with the new NVIDIA Tegra 3 Mobile Processor for clear graphics, faster applications and longer battery life. It includes a 1.5GHz Super 4-PLUS-1 quad-core with an integrated fifth Battery Saver Core and a high-performance 12-Core NVIDIA GPU. The HTC One X also has an amazing 4.7-inch, 720p HD screen crafted from contoured Corning Gorilla Glass.
The quad core processor is the one feature that I think potentially can become adopted by other manufacturers. The four processors can handle heavy memory usage and multiple apps a lot better than the current architecture used by every cellphone manufacturer. I wonder how the battery life will be for the HTC One X?
