The origins of Secretary’s Day
Secretary’s Day, or Administrative Professionals’ Day, dates all the way back to World War 2. Originally the holiday was started due to a shortage of administrative staff during the war, and the National Secretaries Association wanted to show their appreciation to those in administrative positions in the hopes that they would attract more people to the administrative field.
The first official proclamation of the holiday was in 1952 by the then U.S Secretary Of Commerce, Charles Sawyer. Since then the holiday was changed it’s name and date of celebration a few times, and has since gone on to be known as Administrative Professionals’ Week in the United States. Nowadays the holiday honours a broad spectrum of administrative workers in the office environment.
The event is currently celebrated Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa.
