Today is the last day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and after my earlier post a few more products have been made public that caught my attention. I have deliberately not mentioned all of the launches done in Barcelona as there have been plenty.
The first product that I want to mention is the Samsung Galaxy beam. I would not be surprised if some inspiration was taken by the 3M pocket projector as the size of the products are very similar. Note that I am not implying that this might become a patent issue for Samsung. It makes a lot of sense to have such a product available as we are getting more mobile. Imagine the Galaxy Beam in a meeting where everyone just has to watch the presenter taking it out of his pocket and then doing a presentation. I fully understand that this may seem gimmicky to most but potentially the Galaxy may also be used in a social context.
GALAXY Beam lets users spontaneously share photos, videos or other digital media with family or friends by beaming content stored on the device directly onto walls, ceilings or improvised flat surfaces, so that everyone can share the fun without the need to huddle around a smartphone or pad-sized screens. GALAXY Beam’s ultra-bright 15 lumens projector allows users to freely share life’s memorable moments instantly and in crisp clarity, even in outdoor environments.
So you are getting the benefits of a smartphone that is half projector. I wonder if more of these multi purpose cellphones are on the way.
The second cellphone which caught my attention is the LG Optimus 3D Max. Now I am fully aware that the 3D thing with cellphones has been done before. The LG Optimus 3D Max has a 4.3″ (109mm) screen and also contains a NFC chip. Add in the fact that there is no need for 3D Glasses and the LG Optimus 3D Max suddenly has potential to be the real 3D enabled cellphone that we all have been waiting for.
“The Optimus 3D Max was born from LG’s constant efforts to bring user entertainment experience to a higher level,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The introduction of the Optimus 3D last year ushered in a new era for smartphones and Optimus 3D Max is real proof of LG’s commitment to portable 3D entertainment.”
So that is the end of Mobile World Congress for this year. Now we all wait until these products start trickling down to South Africa.
