What you need to PriceCheck before an island holiday

0
  1. A camera. A point-and-shoot will do a good enough job and is perfect for memory-makers. As are smartphones, of course. But if you’re more of a Lord Snowden type you’ll need a camera that will turn your trip into a photographic feast. You might also want to think of getting a waterproof camera so you won’t lose your memories if you drop the thing in the water.
  2. Batteries. Take a good stash with you and keep them on you when you’re sightseeing – there’s nothing like running out of power to dampen an amateur photographer’s spirit. Remember to buy a battery charger too.
  3. Binoculars. A must for any holiday really, but essential for a holiday like this. Think searching the horizon for ocean liners, scouring things in exotic markets, spotting interesting things (and people) on the beach…
  4. Snorkelling gear. The fish world is a sight to behold in places like this – species upon species inhabit a glorious coral kingdom in water so clear and warm it almost beggars belief. You’d have to be crazy not to dive into it.
  5. Flip-flops. Indian Ocean islands may be fringed with soft sandy beaches lapped by warm water – but there are hidden dangers even in heaven. Hopping out of a boat onto coral is no joke when you’re barefoot. There are also all sorts of stinging creatures lurking in underwater nooks and crannies – and a sting from one of these creatures could spoil your whole stay. Even if you aren’t planning to set foot off the beach, remember those silky sands can get pretty baking under that tropical sun – and bare feet + white-hot sand = a lot of eina! Go prepared.
  6. Sunscreen and after-sun gel. And plenty of it. Need we say more?
  7. Insect repellent. Bugs love tropical islands. Your hotel or guesthouse may well have mosquito nets for you to slumber under but you’ll need the strong stuff to rub on when you go out. Anywhere.
  8. Beach towels. Get a couple of new ones. Because you’re going to be swimming a lot on the holiday of your dreams!
