Yup, it’s March; and the blockbuster release schedule is beginning to heat up as we slide further into 2018. This month sees some big-name releases and sequels to earmark on your calendars, including a Steven Spielberg epic and a (very) angry Bruce Willis!
Ready Player One
Release date: 30 March 2018
This long-in-gestation book-to-movie adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg is set to be a visual spectacle when it arrives later this month. Set in 2044 in a dystopian future, the plot follows Wade Watts as he searches for a coveted ‘Easter egg’ in a virtual reality video game called OASIS. The designer of the video game hid this prized item, and the first player to find it will inherit his fortune and corporation – so think of it as a futuristic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with tons of sci-fi action and pop culture references sprinkled throughout this adventure.
Red Sparrow
Release date: 2 March 2018
Jennifer Lawrence has been making some interesting role choices as of late, and her latest sees her take the lead in a spy thriller, alongside Joel Edgerton (Bright) and Jeremy Irons (Justice League). The X-Men star plays a highly trained Russian femme fatale whose mission is to find a traitor in the Russian government, and she has to do anything in her power to achieve that objective. Think of it as a Hitman meets Girl with the Dragon Tattoo amalgam, with a lot of action, deceit, and twists before its grand finale.
Death Wish
Release date: 9 March 2018
Death Wish is the latest addition to the stable of modern remakes, as Bruce Willis takes on the classic revenge story from 1974. The premise is rather simple, and essentially a vehicle for Willis to rack up a bodycount: Dr. Paul Kersey’s wife and daughter are brutally attacked by robbers, and after the event becomes involved in increasingly dangerous episodes of vigilante justice. This one looks to pack a serious punch!
Tomb Raider
Release date: 16 March 2018
Angelina Jolie’s two outings as video game’s famed heroine weren’t bad by any means, but lacked a bit of heart in terms of telling Lara Croft’s origin story. But the pistol-wielding adventurer is about to make an action-packed return to the silver screen with Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, Jason Bourne) taking on the iconic role. Set before Lara becomes a hardened and experienced explorer, the plot is an adaptation of 2013’s video game reboot storyline. Hopefully, this movie breaks the curse of disappointing video game movies once and for all.
Pacific Rim: Uprising
Release date: 23 March 2018
If you loved 2013’s monsters-vs-machines blockbuster Pacific Rim, you’ll be glad to know that the sequel arrives this month. Star Wars star John Boyega, playing the son of deceased Jaeger pilot Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), takes up his father’s mantle to protect mankind from the planet-threatening Kaiju. But, if we’re being honest, the story is a convenient byproduct of why we’re really going to see this movie: watching massive robots have city-destroying fights with inter-dimensional beasts.
