I have had the unfortunate luck of losing my cellphone once and it sucked big time. Suddenly all of your data that was on your simcard (which we take for granted by the way) is gone. Your contact list, sms’s and emails are all no longer yours. I made a promise then that I would look after my phone and help others from not suffering the cellphone fail like I did.
A lot has changed since that day. Apple, Android and BlackBerry have made apps or services available that can help in situations of extreme disaster in terms of data loss. If you are the lucky owner of an Apple notebook, iPad or an iPhone you can through MobileMe, setup a service that provides you the ability to know the location of your device. You are then able to remotely remove data from your device without it getting in the hands of someone else.
Android has something similar called SeekDroid. It allows you to track your phone and if needed remotely wipe data off it.
BlackBerry has an App in Appworld called BlackBerry Protect which does the same thing. You can also set it to backup your data on a given day to ensure that if any data wiping accident happens, you have a data set that you can roll back to. Blackberry Protect also provides you with the ability to remotely wipe your phone of sensitive information that you don’t want a stranger to get his hands on.
Samsung has joined this club with its offering called SamsungDive. SamsungDive can track your mobile device (cellphone or tablet) by using its known phone number and unique product ID. Upon request, the user is provided with the exact GPS coordinates of the device, which can be used to pinpoint the location.
The service is supported for the following devices:
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Wave
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S8.9
So what are you waiting for, download any one of these depending on your needs and which product you own to ensure that you don’t lose all your private data.
